A little bit about me...
I was born, lived and educated in Handsworth, Birmingham, and spent over 30 years policing the West Midlands, leading national and international multi agency teams before retiring as a Detective Superintendent in 2010. I am a descendant of immigrants, just like many people in the West Midlands. My parents immigrated from Ireland in the late 1950's and Dad began working in the car industry in Coventry whilst Mum gave up her career as a nurse to bring up their five children. We have all grown up in the West Midlands and pursued professional careers. I joined West Midlands Police and started on the beat in the Handsworth area and worked my way across the West Midlands tackling a wide range of criminality including burglary, anti social behavior, terrorism, domestic extremism, organised crime and gang violence. I worked with many different agencies and people to develop innovative initiatives to protect the residents of the West Midlands. I've also led multi-agency teams to improve police investigations and support for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, forced marriage, ‘honour’ based violence as well as safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. With my teams I also built strategic partnerships across national and international boundaries to increase community safety through the active policing and supervision of violent and sex offenders. On leaving the police in 2010 I've worked for the General Social Care Council and become a trustee for the Rape and Sexual Violence Project (RSVP) which provides support and counseling for men and women in the Birmingham and Solihull areas. I have a Masters degree in Clinical Criminology and I am studying for a Professional Doctorate in Policing, Security and Community Safety, specialising in the management of high risk offenders. But there's more to be done and that's where you come in. Tell me your views and we'll make the West Midlands even safer. |
